Nice antique original tintype photo
Features a middle aged woman wearing Civil War era dress
"MELAINOTYPE PLATE FOR NEFF'S PAT 19 FEB 56." embossed into the plate at bottom
The first American tintypes were patented by Peter Neff, Jr. in Feb., 1856. He called it a Melainotype. They were on a heavier, thicker metal than the later tintypes, and of a finer quality. A rival of Neff's, Victor Griswold, patented a similar process in Oct., 1856, which he called a Ferrotype. Although Neff's patent predated Griswold's, the name Ferrotype won out in popular usage, before they were generally called "tintypes"
